Format Hard Drive with Disk Utility and MacOS Catalina
For this, first you have to start your Mac from macOS Recovery. Then, you have to select Disk Utility in the Utilities window in macOS Recovery and just select Continue option. Now, in the sidebar, you have to locate a data volume with the same name as your hard drive, and just select it. After this, you should select Edit option and then choose Delete APFS Volume from the menu bar or you can select the delete button ( – ) in the Disk Utility toolbar. It is asks for the confirmation then you should select Delete. When you delete the volume, you need to select Macintosh HD in the sidebar. After this, you should select the Erase button. Here, you have to enter a name which you want the volume to have when you erase it. Now under Format, you should choose either APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to format as a Mac volume. Generally, Disk Utility will show you the Mac format by default.
Here, you should select Erase to start erasing the disk. It may ask to enter your Apple ID. After this, you should quit Disk Utility to return to the Utilities window. In you want your Mac to start up from this volume again, then you should choose Reinstall MacOS from the Utilities window. Format Hard Drive with Other MacOS Versions:
In case, you are using Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, or OS X El Capitan, then you should start your Mac from MacOS Recovery. After this, you should select Disk Utility from the Utilities window in MacOS Recovery. Then, you should select Continue option. Here, you should select your main hard drive in the sidebar which is located on the left called Macintosh HD. Now, you should select the Erase button. In the Format, you should choose either APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to format as a Mac volume. Generally, Disk Utility will shows you the Mac format by default. Here, you have to press Erase button to start erasing the disk. May be you have to enter your Apple ID here. After this, you should quit Disk Utility so that you can return to the Utilities window. You can choose Reinstall macOS from the Utilities window, if you want your Mac to be startup with the volume.
